Novel sources of genetic variation

New alleles or new genes can arise from mutagenesis, somaclonal variation, transgenesis and wide crosses. But these sources should only be seriously considered when there is really nothing suitable in conventional germplasm – because all of them are more difficult to use than "normal" germplasm.
